REVIEW

After four issues of unlikely partners Duke and Cobra Commander being forced to work together to outrun and outwit a vengeful band of grape soda-obsessed rednecks, the Dreadnok War finally reaches its explosive conclusion!

If you would’ve told me a few years ago that not only would I willingly read a GI Joe comic, but that it would be one of the books I was most excited for every month, I’d have said you were crazy. Yet here we are! I am not what I would consider GI Joe's target demographic, but a good story is a good story and Joshua Williamson is a great storyteller. Rebooting such a prolific brand in a way that satisfies longtime fans and welcomes new readers alike is a very delicate balancing act, but Williamson never fails to make it look easy. It also doesn't hurt that his writing is being brought to life by such a competent team of artists. Rus Wooton’s lettering work is consistently dynamic and really shines in his sound effects. Tom Reilly has really cemented himself as one of my favorite artists in the industry with clean line work and expressive characters. Then you’ve got Jordie Bellaire’s bold color choices and Ben-Day dot textures. The way they all work together gives the book an iconic visual tone that manages to look both modern and classic at the same time. Every page is a vibrant, action-packed feast for the eyes!

Everything’s been building to this issue and I’m excited by how well the whole team nailed the landing and after that last page reveal, I can’t wait to see what happens next! Whether you’re a veteran Joe fan or a rookie like me, GI Joe issue 17 will have you yelling “YO JOE!”
