BIG GUNS STUPID REDNECKS come out blasting with AUSTIN ALLEN HAMBLIN

Austin Allen Hamblin is back on the other side of the table, this time being interviewed by Luis Godoy II, over Big Guns Stupid Rednecks, out through Source Point Press July 22nd!

COMIC BOOK YETI: Yeehaw!!! Austin Allen Hamblin, welcome back to the Yeti Cave! It's been a good while since you’ve been here. I heard you had a new comic coming out, and I thought that always means it's a good time to get an interview. How have you been, Austin?

AUSTIN ALLEN HAMBLIN: As Led Zeppelin says, “Good times, bad times. You know I've had my share.” I’ve had a lot of good and a lot of bad recently. However, “I’m still standing better than I ever been!” Okay, okay, I’ll stop with the music quotes now…

CBY: The title of this new comic collection is Big Guns Stupid Rednecks. That is a pretty straightforward title that tells you exactly what the audience is getting, but Austin, what is the story really about?

AAH: My quick pitch is aliens are abducting rednecks and forcing them into laser gun gladiatorial combat for intergalactic cable's newest hit show, Big Guns Stupid Rednecks. There are some deeper themes explored of brotherhood, hatred, and survival, but honestly, it’s mostly exploding rednecks.

CBY: Readers can pre-order Big Guns Stupid Rednecks from their comic shop through May 28th (Final Order Cutoff) with CODE 0526PP1136, with the release date being July 22nd, 2026. Congrats on that. I read in another interview that a big inspiration of the story was Mojo from Marvel’s X-Men. What is it about Mojo that made you want to explore your own version of that?

AAH: My first introduction to Mojo was in the X-Men animated series, and I loved him. A gross alien who was making aliens and mutants fight each other! What was not to love!? Years later, when I really got into comics, I saw that even though he is such a brilliant character, he really isn’t used that much. Since I have yet to hear from Marvel, I had to do a version of my own featuring rednecks…

CBY: Would you do more stories set in the BGSR universe or more redneck stories? Maybe a Rednecks in King Arthur’s Court or something else you've come up with?

AAH: Honestly, I would love to revisit this. I actually have a different comic about the knights of the round table fighting aliens called The Invasion Yo! I think a lot more stories can be told in this universe in a different way. I am really proud of the story for this, but it took me 10 years to get it here. In that time, I’ve had a bunch of other ideas of how I would explore this. For now, it will sit, but when I do come back, the story of Clint and Clay will always be canon. Don’t worry, fans, I’m not going to Star Wars extended universe you all!

CBY: I’ve seen you’ve been teasing a return to one of your earlier series, The Adventures of Punk and Rock? What is that one about?

AAH: That was one of my first full comics I did. It’s with artist Scott Twells. Two screw-up bounty hunters with a narrator who only narrates the comic because he needs to pay alimony to his ex-wife. He talks to the characters, and the reader directly. It’s a lot of fun! We have done six issues before this; each a self contained-adventure which can be read in any order. This one is called Dino Deathrace!

CBY: You’ve got so much going on, you’re also doing a story in the Hospice horror universe called Hospice: The Collector. How did you join that universe?

AAH: Hospice is such a cool thing. A shared horror universe with the anchor of a Hospice for the worst kind of people! My story is with friend Trey Baldwin. It’s based off of a family member of mine who collected horror comics and died in a hospice. Allen Buchholz has the greatest comic book collection known to man, but how was he able to obtain it? Theft, blackmail...and even murder. Allen is the greatest collector, so he's been recruited to be a Grim Reaper - a collector of souls! https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/austinhamblin/hospice-the-collector

CBY: Looking at all these varied series, it doesn’t seem that you stick to any one type of genre, so what are your favorite genres that you have, and haven’t, tackled yet?

AAH: So as a reader, I read everything. I just want a good story. So as a writer, I try and do the same. The main thing I always try and include is snappy dialogue and humor. I need to do a proper romance story...someday…

CBY: Thank you, Austin for stopping by the Yeti Cave, I hope the smell of Yak wasn’t too off-putting. Where can readers find you on the interwebs?

AAH: I reek of Sasquatch, so I didn’t even notice. Am I on social media? You bet I am!
