METRO COMIC CON brings us together in MELBOURNE

Interviews Editor, Andrew Irvin, stepped onto the convention floor at Metro Comic Con, Melbourne to chat with an ensemble of some of Australia's finest comic creators.

Metro Comic Con took place Saturday, July 18th and Sunday, July 19th at Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, which often plays host to the full array of pop culture events on the calendar. The event staff were attentive and helpful the moment I wandered in, and they had my press credentials ready in mere moments.



Headliners included Linda Hamilton and Michael Ironside, and a whole roster of sci-fi, superhero, and fantasy genre performers. Beyond the meeting and greeting and autograph signing, there were panels full of colorful characters underway, gaming and chatting...




The games were bountiful. There was a broad array of both tabletop games...




...and video games, as I caught a shot of the Just Dance set-up mid-selection, between performances, which seemed to be going back-to-back the whole time I was wandering the convention floor.




I took a moment upon witnessing this Pontiac Firebird Trans Am to appreciate the staying power of K.I.T.T. from Knight Rider, which has managed to demonstrate much deeper staying power with the pop culture landscape than I realized. Did you know there was a 2002 and 2004 video game before a 2008-9 reboot of the series? (I sure didn't!)




There were collectable swords, both bladed...




...and illuminated.




I should also note, there was a wider array of dice than the photo does justice. I am not a gambling man, and my PhD. has eaten up whatever time might otherwise go to D&D, but if you needed a good set of dice, Metro Comic Con had it covered.




There was also a fantastic array of cosplay afoot, and I took a quick shot of this rendition of Caine from The Amazing Digital Circus, following in the wake of the series finale a couple just a couple months back.


There were a cluster of guys in matching green tactical outside the convention center by the bike racks when I arrived, and they set the precedent for a cosplay-heavy crowd right from the start.


There were Star Wars droids rolling around, and plenty of fully-suited Mandalorians in the crowd. Every time I see the range of cosplay, I am starkly reminded of how few anime characters I can recognize anymore as the industry continues to grow and diversify, and .


I was particularly impressed by the practical costume design and fabrication of @Gotcha_Props from The National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA), which had a booth showing off props and costumes from their program. My son and I have been contemplating how best to put together a rendition of Majora's mask, but we haven't tackled it yet, and I was particularly impressed by this wearable costume piece (with an equally detailed Skeksis right behind it, for those keeping an eye out).





I also had the opportunity to pick up the latest copy of the periodical, Speculative Insight, which stood out amongst the rest of the convention offerings for providing a selection of referenced essays on a range of topics pertaining to the full breadth of the genre. Alongside picking up comics from all the creators I was able to chat with, this was an immediate purchase given its relevance to my non-comic endeavors.


I could have spent the whole weekend chatting with folks at each and every booth, but following the highlights of the convention from my first impressions, I bee-lined for the comic creator booths with interviews in mind.
