ree

Comic Book Yeti Contributor Luis Godoy II drops his recommendations for the budget-conscious comics consumer for this week.

FLOPPIES - under $5

It's October 1st and spooky season is here, and that means spooky one-shots. I’ll do my best to have only horror and halloween related picks this month.

Archie’s Halloween Spectacular #1

ARCHIE COMICS $4.99

(W) Dan Parent (A) Dan Parent, Bob Smith, Glenn Whitmore, Jack Morelli (CA) Dan Parent, Rosario Tito Pena

I’ve never read any Archie comics, but this is the 1st Halloween one-shot of the month and a perfect way to get into the Halloween spirit or have the spirit get into you.

From the Solicits:

This ain’t no trick, we’re TREATing you with a Halloween spectacular that’s BIGGER than ever! Now packed with 30 PAGES of content, including a BRAND NEW STORY! The South Side Serpents are trying to recruit new members—and what better time to start their initiation than Halloween? This story is filled to the brim with tricks! Featuring fan-favorite characters and returning new faces like MEDUSA DOOM!

EC Cruel Universe 2 #3

(W) Cecil Castellucci, Sarah Gailey, Rian Hughes (A) Kano, Claire Roe, Anna Readman (CA) Lee Bermejo

Sci-Fi and horror always go hand-in-hand, and this 2nd volume of Cruel Universe is no exception. As the solicits says, there are three tales in this book to whet your thirst for scariness.

From the Solicits:

Corporate greed, human desperation, technological despair! Such postulations all are but tiny specks swallowed by the unforgiving void of CRUEL UNIVERSE!EC’s Eisner Award–nominated sci-fi horror anthology continues its deep dive into futuristic depravity and darkness with three new tales from writers Cecil Castellucci (Shade the Changing Girl), Sarah Gailey (Eat the Rich, Buffy the Vampire Slayer), and, in his EC writing debut, Eisner Award nominee Rian Hughes (Batman: Black and White). Illustrating their dark visions are Kano (EC’s Cruel Universe), UK comics sensation Anna Readman (2000 AD), and Claire Roe (EC’s Epitaphs from the Abyss)! Witness as these stellar creative teams probe deep into the dark void of space—and the human soul—in what’s sure to be another stark installment of the Eisner-nominated series!

Gunpowder Prophets #1

MAD CAVE $4.99

(W) Justin Jordan (A/CA) Patrick Piazzalunga

Based on the cover, this feels like it would be a Scooby-Doo type book with horror shenanigans set in some unnamed backwoods areas. Cult leaders, supernatural powers, and grindhouse are all perfect for this time of year.

From the Solicits:

Huck and Marley help people for money. Well, in theory anyway... For some reason, their "help" always seems to involve massive amounts of property damage, a somehow guaranteed collision with the supernatural, and if Marley has his way, a huge body count. They’re the Gunpowder Prophets, and a simple job rescuing a girl from a backwoods cult turns weird when the super groovy leader's supernatural powers turn out to be very, very real. It’s seventies-style horror mixed with grindhouse action in Gunpowder Prophets. Gonzo over-the-top action horror from Justin Jordan (The Strange Talent of Luther Strode), Patrick Piazzalunga (Monsters are My Business), Roman Stevens, and Taylor Esposito.
