REVIEW
In the aftermath of Daniel Warren Johnson’s heartpounding exit in Transformers #24, Robert Kirkman continues to pick up the pieces and set up the next era in the Transformers mythos. After defeating the Decepticons in the battle of Chicago, the Autobots finally have the upper hand and are reviving and repairing their allies left and right. Meanwhile, Megatron is back and licking his wounds along with the rest of the Decepticons, but the cracks are starting to show more than ever. I’m not sure if they had therapists back on Cybertron, but there’s no doubt that Megatron could use one right about now.
Not much has happened yet in the four issues since Kirkman took the reins, but this issue does a great job of bringing things to a boiling point. It doesn’t seem like the Autobots will have much more time to catch their breath as a maddened Megatron finally starts to go on the offensive. Dan Mora’s art is as clean and crisp as ever and brought to life with vibrant colors from Mike Spicer. Rus Wooton crushes the lettering with plenty of fun sound effects throughout. This issue might have set some kind of record with how many transformation “KO KO KHEE KAH KOO”s it has in one scene.
While I’m definitely ready for the story to ramp back up soon, what Transformers issue 28 lacks in action, it more than makes up for in character development. Arcee is getting the respect she deserves and new Autobot Thundercracker may just be my favorite character now, but no one is being built up more than Megatron. He may have been largely absent during Daniel Warren Johnson’s run of the series, but Kirkman’s here to remind you just how terrifying of a villain Megatron can be. The calm before the storm seems to be coming to a close and when it does, Autobots beware, because Megatron is not taking the recent loss well at all and he’s ready to make it everybody’s problem!
