REVIEW
I like to go into most reviews without any prior knowledge, if possible. So I read this before searching for the technical info like release date, price, etc. The Thing on the Doorstep starts with a murder, as seen on the preview pages above. A gruesome murder, that I was surprised how it happened without warning. The story starts in 1933 with Daniel Upton shooting his "friend" (in quotes because, why would he shoot a friend) Edward Derby but then the story goes back 35 years to their first meeting and goes thru various points in their lives. The mystery of the shooting is not resolved by the end of issue 1 but it definitely warrants continuing on to the next issue. The art is very clear and it feels just the right amount of gritty for such a gruesome tale. The colors fit the tone of the story very well and the lettering does what good lettering does and blends with the art.
Now, I started the review stating I like to go in blank, but after research I found that it was based on a H.P. Lovecraft story, which I am not very knowledgable on most of Lovecraftian stories. I've read (listened to the audiobook) of The Call of Cthulhu and other Weird Stories. I can see now where this would be a Lovecraft type book which deals with madness and the occult, not that he owns those types of stories but that is what he was known for. I am interesting and seeing where this one goes and will not check out the stories it is based on until this miniseries is complete. If you're interested in Lovecraftian tales, check out The Thing on the Doorstep.
