THE OFFSPRING, ISSUES #1-2

Writer/Illustrator/Letterer/Creator: David Whalen

Colorist: Jason Sylvestre

Publisher: Correct Handed Productions

***TRIGGER WARNING: ABDUCTION & R*PE THEMES***

The Offspring, issue #1, cover, Correct Handed Productions, Whalen/Sylvestre

WHAT IS IT?

A cult-themed horror story where old friends come together to battle an evil that's preying on. children.

It kind of reminds me of the second half of the novel, IT, mixed with the first season of True Detective.

WHAT’S IT ABOUT?

(Minor Spoilers)

Kids are being abducted mysteriously, and it seems like it might be cult-related.

Meanwhile, three friends, all of which seem to come from turbulent pasts, join together to try to fight off the darkness...or at least to figure out what's happening.

But the darkness may have more sinister plans for them and for the children they're abducting.

Just what is going on? And how will these friends get over their pasts and help stop these dark days from coming to pass?

WHAT WORKS?

  • I'm eager to see how/if Whalen delves more into the effect of trauma on the main characters

  • Whalen has a good eye for building tension through panel layout

  • Great to see color in an indie comic!

  • The "M" rating is a good and appreciated warning for the contents inside

  • As far as indie comics go, this is a solid choice for horror

  • I think the set-up could be leading to a very cool, albeit heavy, terrifying tale

WHAT DOESN’T WORK?

  • Incredibly adult, with violence and adult themes, along with the trigger warnings at the top of the page

  • Similarly, the violence against women and children might not be for all audiences

  • After reading the first two issues, they don't quite seem to match the description of the series online, though it might still be doing set-up

  • Characters can feel a little archetypical – if their personalities, backstories and motivations were mixed up amongst them, it could solve for it

  • Some typos throughout take you out of the moment

WHY SHOULD I READ IT?

For people who like their horror content to be the "super messed-up" kind, this is the indie comic for you. Sacrificial cults, characters with awful past experiences, and potentially even special powers and time travel make this an intriguing title to consider checking out.
