Introduction to the book
I was given the opportunity for an early look at issue one of Red Vector by David “DB” Andry, one half of the writing team. First off, thank you, I'm incredibly grateful. I’ve only been writing about comics for a short time and so far done just a single review. As part of what I do here at Comic Book Yeti, I noticed Red Vector in the June 2025 Solicitations from Mad Cave on the Lunar Distribution's website, and it caught my eye. The standard A cover has a bold red/orange/yellow palette of colors that immediately jumps out at you. There are, what I assumed before reading, the 4 main characters. The arrangement of the characters on the cover immediately reads as the blonde man and the dark haired man as oppositional to each other and the woman feels like a bridge between them. Before elaborating, here is the description of the first issue.
From the publisher
Cora Martinez has seen her fair share of conflict-- as a Sonoran Desert Park Ranger, she straddles the line between sheltering desperate immigrants and steering others away from an uncertain fate. She longs for a place where disputes such as these no longer exist. But a clash far bigger than any on Earth is about to rip the heavens apart and crash land upon her doorstep with the arrival of two opposing combatants in an alien civil war through a rift in space! The earthbound space opera from the creators of Morning Star and Crush Depth begins! When the stars fell, war came to Earth.
Analysis
The book introduced the protagonists of Red Vector really quickly and established the stakes at hand. The setup reminds me of a movie my Dad had I watch called Enemy Mine. In that movie, enemy combatants end up crash landing on a planet alien to each of them, and they must learn about each other and end up not only becoming friends but also respecting each other. I don’t know where the story of Red Vector is going but the setup really reminded me of that movie. The enemies of the story somehow end up on Earth, but in Red Vector, a third person is involved, park ranger Cora Martinez. Visually the story has the feel of the Star Wars universe but maintains its own distinct visual footprint.
The design of the book is great. It's exactly what you expect from the Second Rocket team. Chris Evenhuis' artwork reads clear and expansive without much hatching. There's a lot of great character designs as well and a dog sidekick for Cora which I’m always a sucker for. The colors complement the tone of each scene. Sjan Weijers does a great job in that department. The writing team really threw down quite the challenge for letterer Buddy Beaudoin. There are a lot of visually distinct sounds, captions and dialog balloons which blend seamlessly with the art, which is exactly what you’d expect from an experienced letter like Buddy.
Conclusion
If you’re a fan of Star Wars fan or a fan of sci-fi stories or a fan of stories where enemies have to work together to save themselves or die fighting alone, I think you’re going to love Red Vector. The cover alone should get you excited.
There's a companion interview on the Cryptid Creator Corner with the one and only Jimmy Gaspero if you want to hear more about this impressive new series.
