Review
Set in Torreon, Mexico in 1913, the early years of the Mexican Revolution, Pancho Villa Monster Hunter wastes no time in getting you into the action. The story blends history and fantastical in a smooth way that it doesn't feel like a history lesson. Guns are blazing, sombreros worn proudly and monsters stand no chance when Pancho Villa gets them in his sights. Pancho Villa not only wants to protect the people of Mexico from these monster, its personal. His sister was a victim and he believes those behind the monsters are those that murdered his sister.
The art is really great, Ariel Medel and Saul Shavanas really set the tone of this book . Its bright when it needs to be and moody when it fits the story. I really enjoyed the half-tones employed in the shadows and shading. The faces are varied and full of emotion. There is a real depth to the art, when characters need to be pulled in to the foreground or pushed to the background, Medel and Shavanas make it work perfectly. The monster designs also work really well, I really enjoyed the final page.
Hector Rodriguez III, pulls double duty on the book as writer and letterer. The flow of scene to scene really works well without feeling rushed. Each scene is allowed to breathe without sacrificing the pacing. Rodriguez III also make sure to focus on lots of part of Mexican culture throughout, such the early battles of the revolution, curanderas, catholic faith, demons, and corrupt government officials.
