In this Megatron-centric, fast-paced follow-up to the story started in Transformers #19, we learn that the trials Megatron faced in that issue were actually just the tip of the iceberg! Previously, it appeared that Megatron had failed to prove himself worthy of the Matrix of Leadership’s dark counterpart and was given a third transformation mode (a gun) as a consolation prize, but it turns out he’s being given a second chance at Prime-like power!
I’ll admit I found this second chapter a little confusing compared to the first part of this story. Issue 19, written by Daniel Warren Johnson, made it seem like Megatron’s trials were something that happened long ago that he was having a flashback of. The outcome of this issue, written this time around by Robert Kirkman, framed Megatron’s continued trials to be a battle happening in real time in his mind as his fellow Decepticons try and fail to restrain him.
That aside though, Ludo Lullabi’s return to art duties is a welcome one as this issue keeps the dialogue decidedly light compared to past issues and gives Ludo and colorist Mike Spicer space to really show off their combined talents in page after page of stunning action sequences. This issue isn’t just one big fight scene though, the plot is still moved forward with a big reveal toward the end leading to the set-up for the next stage of Megatron’s malevolent ascension!
