The Story:

The story follows four young experiments made of human, animal, and machine called "amalgams," who were created and manipulated by a mad scientist named Cormac to serve his horrific obsession in abducting humans to make monsters. And while they're as playful as they are cruel to both humans and each other, our characters must work together to obtain new subjects for their master's experiments or suffer harsh consequences in their failure from either Cormac or the humans who hate them. But Malik also wishes to be more than just a minion...He wants to experiment on humans to create amalgams, just like his master. And in order to prove to Cormac that he's capable of doing so, Malik creates a little experiment of his own. But would being like his master bring the fulfillment he seeks? Or will it lead Malik towards a darker path, where he'll have to confront some of his deeper anxieties and fears, and perhaps his very nature as a monster? And what if he's not the only one in his group struggling with something from within?

REVIEW

For those that don't know The Wretched is a comic live on Kickstarter (at the link above) until May 14th. Check it out. I was lucky enough to get an early chance to read the whole book, its complete. I typically don't look to far into a campaign page, especially when I review books on Comic Book Yeti. I try to go in as cold as possible to give an honest review.

The book throws you into this new world but doesn't go out of its way to explain it. It allows the story to explain the world through its dialog and the action, not with exposition. The story is about Malik, one of the amalgams, attempts to prove to its father, Cormac, that it is worthy of the life its creator bestowed on it. At the surface its these creatures who would generally considered bad attacking the local humans but beneath that its the story of family and feeling unloved. It really locks you into to caring about the amalgams.

Brian really did well making you feel like each character had a unique voice through the dialog. The art by Adam, Richard and Mariam really works well. Its a brutal world and its pulled off beautifully. The colors fit the world well, its a dash of medieval and modern at the same time without feeling drab.

Bravo to the team and with it already being full funded its pretty much guaranteed that you will get the book. Please check it out.
