Loss, Grief, and Aztec Mythology - This Eternal Coil Goes Hard
This Eternal Coil is about the emotional and physical journey taken by a Mexican father, Abraham, and his daughter, Elena, after the death of his wife, Isabella. Isabella's death sets off a chain of events that draws Abraham into a trip through Mictlan, the Aztec afterlife. Meanwhile, Elena investigates a shady corporation that may have a connection to this newly immortal and barren world.

Why is this story important to me?
This project is not just a family adventure full of important Latin cultural touchstones, it's been an emotional catharsis, helping me process the grief of losing two family members: my father, who passed on Christmas Day in 2021, and my sister-in-law, who died in a terrorist attack in 2015. My father never got the chance to meet my son, and without me intending it, This Eternal Coil was clearly shaped by their loss and everything I felt in its wake. It's hard not to see the parallels between their journey and ours.
In our story, Abraham begins to process his own grief by building an ofrenda to mourn his wife mirroring a ritual I started to honor my own deceased loved ones, something I'd never done before that point. My hope is that the parallel journeys of my life and our story's narrative can help others process loss the way it helped me.
