In Eila and Something Shiny, you will take on the role of Eila, a rabbit who, after a series of uninspiring jobs, inherits a dilapidated farm from her grandfather. The premise is familiar, but the execution is brimming with personality. Eila is not just a silent avatar; she’s relatable with her own hopes, anxieties, and an absolutely adorable obsession with anything that glitters. The "Something Shiny" of the title isn't just a cute phrase—it's a core mechanic and a perfect reflection of Eila's character. Spotting a glint in the grass or a sparkle in the riverbed and rushing over to unearth a treasure is a constant, joyful mini-game that never gets old.
The game is a campaign that is played over five chapters(or six if you play the intro chapter). There are unique situations as you progress through the story, but the game keeps you on your toes as you work to progress Eila throughout the story. Each chapter takes anywhere from 30-45 minutes once you understand the game.Â
The best part of how Eila and Something Shiny is set up is that you can save where you are in the campaign. There is a scorepad that allows you to mark which cards you start the next chapter with, and it allows you to mark which ending you have achieved to note for future plays as well.
I’m only through chapter 2 of Eila and Something Shiny, but this game has impressed me with how quickly it can be played, and it still forces you to be strategic with the actions you take which are on the cards. The cards have a bit of a curve on them throughout the time that I’ve owned the game, but that has been the only thing that I’ll complain about with the game. Everything else, including the components, is phenomenal, which leads me to highly recommend owning this!
