Black Hammer Lands on Substack

As many of you know, Substack has become the place for comic creators to go and seek creative freedom through community backing. Jeff Lemire is one of the many creators who signed up months ago, and recently he gave word to subscribers that the next big project is a prequel story to the Black Hammer Universe. The new Original Graphic Novel will be written by Jeff Lemire, with art by Stefano Simeone and letters by Nate Piekos.

The new graphic novel is called The Last Days of Black Hammer, and will follow the original Black Hammer, Jospeh Weber, on the days leading up to his battle with cosmic villain Anti-God. Lemire stated that the graphic novel will be released in parts through Substack, and that after it is complete, Dark Horse Comics will publish a collected version. “The Last Days of Black Hammer...is a graphic novel I have wanted to do for a while,” says Jeff Lemire. “I’m so excited to be working with Stefano Simeone to bring this to life and to release it in such a unique way.”

This comes as a big surprise to most because Jeff Lemire recently signed an exclusive deal with Image Comics to bring all of his creator-owned comics to the publisher. Some asked what this would mean for the beloved series Black Hammer, and any spin-off series. For the short-term, we know that this OGN is staying with Dark Horse.
