An exclusive look at SHRUB: The Collected Edition from FANBASE PRESS

Our friends over at Fanbass Press, a GLAAD Media Award-winning and Eisner & Harvey Awards-nominated publisher, recently went live with SHRUB: The Collected Edition over on Kickstarter. They were kind enough to send us a couple of exclusive preview pages to showcase for this series, which strives to destigmatize loss and promote understanding of the way people of all ages grieve.

Emmy Award nominee Shane Portman (Tumble Leaf, Shape Island) teams up with illustrator Andy Alves (Cosmic Cadets), Colorists Sophia Du & Celia FitzFerald, and Letterer Oceano Ransford (Rikki) to bring you an 8-issue middle-grade Graphic Medicine series that explores how someone grieves and how it "takes root".

The new collected edition of SHRUB will have several new features - some of my favorites are:

  • an introduction by voice-over actor, writer, and producer Yuri Lowenthal (Peter Parker / Spider-Man - Marvel Rivals, Marvel's Spider-Man);

  • a resource guide by Dr. David J. Schonfeld (Director, National Center for School Crisis and Bereavement at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles)

  • a fold-out page within each issue to offer readers an exciting and tactile way to dig deeper into the story during their reading experience.

There are many more new additions as well as rewards that you can check out over on the Kickstarter campaign for SHRUB: The Collected Edition!

Hit the road with a sentient Shrub for a cross-country trip to Hollywood!

Join Shrub and a grieving brother and sister as they head out in search of connection. On their journey, pit stops, wacky plant enthusiasts, uprooting, and re-routing abound.

“In the footsteps of ET or Wall-E, Shrub and their insatiable awe for everything they come in contact with - people, birds, cows, even vending machines - are the open-hearted catalyst of this story,” said Shane Portman. “Their tender connection to each character is a living example of the empathy that we all need and deserve.”

Below is our look at 3 exclusive preview pages for Comic Book Yeti; be sure to check out the campaign for SHRUB here before it ends on October 9th!
